Mr Gregory J Koppenol was appointed President of the Land and Resources Tribunal in December 1999. He is at a level equivalent to a Supreme Court judge.

After leaving school, the President worked in the Public Trust Office. He later obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree with Honours, graduating as the top student in his year. He was admitted as a barrister in 1983 and was in private practice at the Brisbane Bar from 1984 until his appointment.

He developed a busy general practice at the Bar and later specialised in native title and related areas. He was widely briefed for a variety of parties in those fields. He appeared as counsel in a large number of cases including some of the most important in Australia’s history – Mabo (No. 2) and Wik.
